BUG CONTROL FOR COCKROACHES, ANTS, SPIDERS, WEEVILS, BEETLES, SILVERFISH
For the most part, these pests would rather eat your lunch than you, and they proliferate when humans get sloppy and buildings and grounds maintenance is deferred. Cockroaches love an overflowing rubbish bin and all they need is a dark place to hide during daylight hours.
Other pests like spiders, beetles and ants rest in vegetation outside and move inside from there, so an overgrown garden can be just a stepping stone toward more up-market quarters in your kitchen.
RODENT CONTROL FOR RATS AND MICE
Rats commonly forage in a 50-meter radius and one colony may be dominating an entire building, making them controllable with a few well-chosen bait and trap placements.
Mice seldom establish territories that extend beyond 10 metres. If you find evidence of mice, draw an imaginary boundary 3 metres in each direction – this is the likely territory of a single mouse colony. Look here for entry points, feeding areas, and nest sites.
BEDBUGS AND FLEAS
Fleas not only bite, creating red, itchy swellings, they can transmit several diseases such as plague and murine typhus, and can even transfer tapeworms to your pets. Their saliva can also cause allergic reactions in pets and humans.
Because fleas can withstand freezing and remain dormant for long periods, it’s very common for a flea infestation to already be living in an empty home. They’ll spring to life as soon as people move in.
POSSUMS, RABBITS AND FERAL CATS
As with birds, these wild mammals often carry diseases. The first line of defence is a fence, but if that’s not possible making your property unattractive to them will prevent them from moving in.
FLIES AND MOSQUITOES, WASPS AND BEES
Flies are found in virtually every human habitat because they’re attracted to the same things we are – food and water. They like to breed in areas that are warm, wet and often overlooked during routine cleaning, such as floor drains, refrigerator evaporation trays, and rubbish bins that have decaying food residues.
Mosquitoes are notoriously difficult to control due to their rapid breeding habits, for which they need standing water in the immediate environment. Clearing blocked drains, emptying or eliminating water containers and raking up leaves that hold moisture will help drive them away.
Wasps need prompt attention to ‘seek and destroy’ the hive. Left alone the hive gets larger and more wasps appear, compounding the problem. Wasps can aggressively sting people, so care must be taken to eradicate them quickly.
